What is "All Natural"?

Posted by Sierra Jack on 4/3/2012 to Health

All Sierra Jack petfoods are certified to be 100% Natural by The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Quality ingredients fortify every product we sell.

We start with human consumption grade quality ingredients; not by-products, dyes, artificial flavors, or preservatives. We use chicken from the broiler industry, produced in USDA inspected plants, that is antibiotic free with no added hormones. Our lamb is from grass fed, free range sheep. Our grains - Select No.1.  Our eggs - All Grade A!

Meat Based Formulas:  Our foods are meat based with a meat meal, not a grain, as the first ingredient.  In pet food terms, a meat meal has had approximately 70% which is water removed, and provides on average, 11 times more protein than the original meat.

Natural Preservatives:  Our foods are naturally, not chemically preserved, using Vitamin E, Mixed Tocopherols (an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals) and Rosemary extract.

Reduced Cooking Temperatures: mean that our foods take longer to prepare, but your pets are worth it.  The end result is better tasting food, and more deliverable nutrition and digestibility, which at over 89%, is one of the industry’s highest.

Sequestered Vitamins & Trace Minerals: 8 Groups are released in the intestines, not the stomach, providing maximum absorption, minimum waste, and 4 times the level of nutrients.  There is no need to provide supplemental vitamins, unless treating a specific condition.

Dehydrated Kelp: is added as a source of B-12, 21 amino acids, and 13 other vitamins. Plus, Kelp contains iodine that is essential for correct functioning of the thyroid, controlling the metabolism, and crucial to overall health and skin and coat development.

Yucca Shidigera: is included to reduce stool size & odor, minimize excreted gas, and aid in the prevention & reduction of arthritis and joint inflammation.

Flaxseed: Provides the proper ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids.  Contains B Vitamins, Protein and Zinc.  Studies have shown that Flaxseed maintains healthy bones and joints and  may reduce the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis.

Beet pulp: A superior source of fermentable fiber needed for optimal bowel function. Unlike many other fibers, this "pre-biotic" produces "short chain fatty acids" which the good intestinal bacteria thrive on.  The sugar has been removed from the beet pulp.

Brewers Yeast: An excellent source of B Vitamins, amino acids and minerals.  Important for nervous system function, the metabolizing of fats and proteins and the conversion of carbohydrates.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies.

Purpose and Function of AAFCO:

Although AAFCO has no regulatory authority, the Association provides a forum for the membership and industry representation to achieve three main goals:

  • Ensure consumer protection
  • Safeguarding the health of animals and humans
  • Providing a level playing field of orderly commerce for the animal feed industry.

These goals are achieved by developing and implementing uniform and equitable laws, regulations, standards, definitions and enforcement policies for regulating the manufacture, distribution and sale of animal feeds - resulting in safe, effective and useful feeds by promoting uniformity amongst member agencies.
