If you buy brand names like Science Diet, Pedigree, Purina, Beneful – then let me tell you about the harmful “ingredients” that these giant corporations don’t want you to know about.
1. BHT and BHA
Cancer causing and “human banned” chemicals like BHT and BHA are found in almost every major brand’s pet foods and treats. The FDA has done nothing to protect pets from these carcinogens, so there is no motivation for the “Purinas of the world” to voluntarily remove them from their products. It would simply hurt their profits. Cancer is the #1 cause of death in our pets today – it accounted for 50% of all deaths last year!
2. Decaying Meat
It is currently legal for corporations to add all kind of nasty, decaying meat to their products. The FDA also allows “roadkill, dying or diseased animals, disabled, and spoiled or contaminated meat” to be used in pet food. The effect of ingesting these toxic substances are serious medical issues, including skin irritation and gastrointestinal problems. Do you find yourself cleaning up after you dog often, even if he hasn’t gotten into something he wasn’t supposed to? The spoiled food doesn’t need to be found in the garbage can – it’s already in a fresh new bag of Beneful.
3. Meaty Byproduct
Now there’s a nebulous term. Example: diseased meat with tumors attached, plastic, or sawdust. Poultry byproducts, for instance, can include: “the carcass of slaughtered poultry such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines exclusive of feathers…” “Meat” and “by-products” are found in Milk-Bones (Del Monte), Pup-Peroni (Del Monte), Busy Bones (Purina), Moist n Meaty (Purina), T-Bonz (Purina), and Beneful Snackin’ Slices (Purina).
4. MSG
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a salt based substance and highly addictive. It’s widely argued that this additive is used to make low quality, disgusting foods attractive to dogs. Does this remind you or nictotine and cigarettes? It should. Cigarette companies were not interested people’s health, and neither are pet food conglomerates concerned about the health of your dog. MSG is also tied to obeisity.
5. Preservative and Chemicals
Here’s the bottom line – huge pet food companies have a lot of their product made overseas in China. A quick Google search will show you the number of recalls and scandals revolving around this relationship. We just don’t know what corners the Chinese are willing to cut. And it’s not just animal at risk - there have been widely publicized cases of Chinese factories making “Barbie” dolls and popular children’s toys with lead paint!! Do you really think these shady industries care what’s in YOUR dog’s food when they don’t even care about children?! Really?!
